The command “hold still” usually reaches us in moments when stillness is the very last thing possible — or wise. Much like the phrase “move along, nothing to see here,” it carries an undertone of suspicion, a quiet coercion we instinctively resist.

In truth, one might be better advised to consider the remaining options: flee — or fight.
