"There is very quiet, intense yet quiet interaction for minutes on end, reminding me of some of AMMs work, but with more electronic means. These draw the piece into a more electro-acoustic improvisation, with touches of real instruments. (...) Great stuff."

"These nuanced and captivating journeys rely on the rich vocabularies of these idiosyncratic improvisers, their deep listening dynamics, an orchestral vision that denies any distinction between sound art and music, and their irreverent but surprisingly elegant sensibility of form and structure."
(Percorsi Musicali, December 2024)

"Caution — a paradox looms. While anyone whose project name identifies with flowers must have some awareness of a bloom’s brief span of existence, the music of Flowers We Are occupies elongated time frames. The two tracks on this CD span 25:03 and 14:20, and each displays a willingness on the part of the musicians to let the sounds the produce grow at a natural pace. Perhaps they’re emulating the entire growth cycle of plants, not just the moment when they flower? And perhaps the improvisers have that marvelously astute characterization of AMM’s concerts in mind; given their temporal generosity and laminal qualities, one could say that “Celeste” and “Nocturnal Butterflies” are as alike and unalike as trees in a forest."

video

Flowers We Are brings together three extraordinary musicians: Serbian pianist Marina Džukljev, sound architect Matija Schellander on electronics, and cellist Noid, alias Arnold Haberl.
The trio moves effortlessly between minimalist electronics, free improvisation, and orchestral splendor. At times, Morton Feldman's meditative patience is reflected, at others, echoes of Fennesz's noise landscapes or the physical directness of an AMM improvisation shimmer through.
Flowers We Are is a bouquet of sonic blossoms—complex, surprising, and rewarding for anyone who lingers and listens.
Marina Džukljev explores the piano with unconventional techniques and a wide range of expressive possibilities. Her music is abstract, experimental, and influenced by the heritage of piano history.
Arnold Haberl (Noid) is an Austrian improvisational musician, composer, and sound artist. His work includes cello solos, ensemble compositions, electronic performances, sound installations, and videos.
Matija Schellander, Austrian composer, double bassist, and electronic musician, works with instruments and field recordings, both in the studio and on stage. Timbre, sampling, and organic soundscapes characterize his work, which ranges from musique concrète to jazz and new music to traditional and film music.

"The set of Flowers We Are was all about staying the course. Matija Schellander (electronics), Arnold "noid" Haberl (cello) and Marina Dzukljev (harmonium) occupied discrete positions within a varied but implacable drone. As the players projected signals that alternately attracted and repelled each other, the layered sound grew more and more turbulent."
